HIGHLIGHTS for Private Tour
Start. 4:00 p.m. (April-October) or 11:00 a.m. (November-March). We meet outside the metro station of ‘Acropolis’ click here.
1. DIONYSIOU AREOPAGITOU STREET
This pedestrian street is the main path that leads to the sacred rock of the Acropolis. The pedestrianization was eventually undertaken within the context of the unification of its archaeological sites. Along its way we will see artists perform their art, while many Athenians take their stroll along with the world travelers.
2. NEW ACROPOLIS MUSEUM or ‘PERIPATOS’ walking tour- which one will you choose?
Option a. The New Acropolis Museum is facing the southern part of the sacred rock of the Acropolis, and it is situated approximately 300 m. (1000 f.) from the Parthenon itself. Why is it so important? It houses finds with historical significance and great artistic value that have also influenced its architectural plan.
Option b. ‘Peripatos’ is the greek word for “Walk” after which was named the ancient path that surrounds the ancient rock of the Acropolis all around. “Walk” allowed ancient Athenians to visit many and irregular monuments at the northern, eastern and southern slope of the Acropolis while admiring the attic landscape. Following the ancient path we will come across sanctuaries and important public edifices of ancient Athens and we will end up climbing at the sacred rock of the Acropolis.
3. ACROPOLIS SACRED ROCK
Its name is a combination of the two Greek words; acro –high point and polis –city, and it means ‘at the highest point of the city’! The always-welcoming sacred rock in the center of Athens waits for you to discover its secrets and reveal its glorious history. How Athens emerged as the leading power in Greece? What did the Athenians want to emphasize with all these impeccable edifices, besides of honoring their goddess?
4. PROPYLAEA & TEMPLE OF ATHENA NIKE
Built by Mnesicles in five years! Built by Callicrates during the Polynesian war! Last stop before we enter inside the sacred rock. We will talk about the aforementioned monuments and about the hills we see in front of us; the Hill of Muses, the Hill of Nymphs and the Hill of Areopagus.
5. PARTHENON
Built by Ictinus and Callicrates in nine years! This is the ultimate gift to the goddess Athena from her citizens! Ancient Greeks loved the “visual games” in order to endow their buildings with movement, balance, power and elegance. The grace and the harmony of the Parthenon is based on its famous optical refinements too. Let’s try to define them together…
6. ERECHTHEION
Built possibly by Callicrates, last but not least! This is a complex building with different use and shape on each one of its four sides and it is certainly not an ordinary temple. Follow me to the most sacred place of the Acropolis.
Finish. Around 8:00 p.m. (april-october) or 3:00 p.m. (november-march) will be the end of our tour. Drop off at the metro station of ‘Acropolis’.
The tour can be customized around your needs and your schedule.
