After two weeks filled with fun, adrenaline and adventure encountering great herds of Buffaloes, Elephants, Zebras we set our trails towards Victoria falls. A day well spent by my group in the gorges of “The Mighty Zambezi river “rafting it out on the grade 5 rapids ‘Pure adrenaline sport’. I give all my respect to this wonderful adrenaline activity, which in fact is one of my favourites.
The Khama Rhino Sanctuary (KRS) is a community based wildlife project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing rhinoceros, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local Botswana community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources. Covering approximately, 4300 hectares of Kalahari Sand veld, the sanctuary provides prime habitat for white and black rhino as well as over 30 other animal species and more than 230 species of birds. After so many years of effort and hard work ,the stunningly beautiful natural landscape offered us a close encounter with one of earth’s most endangered species “The Rhinoceros” and various wildlife and bird species “The haven for the Meyers Parrot”.
The large number of rhinos and calves at such close proximity to one another was so amazing, we must have encountered about 8 females with calves and had great photographic opportunities afforded to us by these majestic beasts .Over the past 30 years the world has encountered a series of declines in the rhino populations, due to the fact that it is believed that the horn possesses some medicinal properties. Scientific explanations and research have shown that the same keratin we possess in our hairs and nails is the same as the components that make up the rhino horn with no medicinal use at all.
