Kotor is Montenegro’s major tourist resort, lying off the Adriatic coast. Meanwhile the capital of Montenegro is Podgorica, some 85 kms away.
Kotor is the old Mediterranean port surrounded by fortification built during the Venetian period. It is located in the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) between stunning mountains Orjen and Lovcen.
Its long history can be seen on every corner of its Old Town, shaped by the influence of many different empires. It was part of the Roman empire, Byzantine, settlement of Slav tribes and their first countries. Venice influenced the city for more than 400 years, and Austro-Hungary till its fall. In addition it is one of the few areas in this part of the Balkan region that was never occupied by the Ottoman empire.
The Old Town of Kotor with its fortifications, Perast, and Our lady of the rocks, has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. This is due to its gorgeous, well-preserved architecture and seamless integration of the town with the sweeping landscape. Moreover it has a unique mixture of different cultures. About 60% of Montenegro’s culture is found in the municipality of Kotor.
The Old Town is positioned deep inside the bay covered by high mountains. But other parts of the municipality extend along the bay, making it one of the most beautiful and picturesque areas to visit.
All around the town, at the first zone from the sea you can find many centuries old palaces and stone houses. They show the wealthy style of Kotor’s ancestors.
Kotor is a famous port. Made famous by the sailors that docked in this oldest part of town it dates from the 9th century. Nowadays you have the Boka bay navy troops.
Another part of the municipality, as you drive or sail along the bay, is a unique place called Perast. It is the best preserved baroque settlement in the region. Not only was it the home of captains but also housed the most famous Adriatic maritime school from the 17 and 18 centuries. This is one of the most charming settlements along the Adriatic coast for sure.
In addition check out the man-made island, Our lady of the Rocks. that dates from the 15th century. The island was built in the middle of the sea, on the spot where the icon of Our lady was found by a local sailor. Locals saw it as a sign from God to build an island on this very spot. Then a church was constructed so they could pray for calm seas and the safe return of their sailors. Even today this tradition is still kept alive. The island is currently 3000 square metres in size with a beautiful church and museum.
Kotor and its surrounding area also offers the visitor some outstanding panoramic views. These sightseeing points (a famous one being at Lovcen – Kotor 25 Serpentine Road), can be seen by road or by sea.
In Kotor you can also find some great dining options. The typical local food is a combination of Mediterranean cuisine with fish and other seafood, but also influenced by the Balkan style with lots of meat, soups and vegetables. In short, many gastronomic options to choose from.
Kotor is just few kms away from the biggest peninsula of Montenegro, Lustica. Home of donkeys and olives, excellent dining options also exist in this area. Moreover Tivat town with its most modern yachting marine of Montenegro is only 10 km away.
During the period from 15th May to 10th October the sea temperature is over 18°C, thereby offering the visitor an extended swimming season that can last for as long as 144 days. Indeed the area of Kotor has a dry warm summer and a mild humid winter. Average annual temperature is 15.2 °C. The warmest month is July with average air temperature of 25°C. The coldest is January with 7.4°C. Interestingly autumn is warmer than spring by about 2°C.
