why shouldyou visit Uganda

By HERBERT, independent tour guide in Uganda

Why should you come to Uganda?

I (Herbert) join all previous tour operators and companies to welcoming you to a new Uganda that all our tourists, guests, volunteers and partners in development from continents of the world over have tried to find. I am  sure you will enjoy the warmth, smile, comfort, tangible and intangible things/feelings, reality of Uganda –African culture, happiness, laughs, joy, wonder of what has been said about Africa and what you have read about Africa as well as what you have experienced yourself and appreciate its hospitality of Uganda people and its beautiful environment. In this way you are all experiencing in real life what Uganda means or is. The more critically you observe, reflect on what you see,, the more each one of you is able to actively participate in the task before us this afternoon/evening or morning is what defines Uganda in a real context and will help each of you bridge the gap between African culture, History of diseases, murder, Dark continent and all that you have read and heard from ancient books and magazines.

I (Herbert) wish to “shock” the tour organizers who make tour plans/trips and perhaps the entire audience by being fully honest with you all my fellow visitors/guests. I accepted this call of tourism business not only for my sake but for your sake and my community as well. I have never been confronted with such a brief, precise and challenging topic of defining what Uganda is/ what an ideal person/client/tourist is? When I received this vision of tourism business, therefore I was more than excited. I myself wanted to know what Uganda is and that is why I am here with ONE VILLAGE TOURS. An ideal client is that one who accepts and discusses with me the travel package I design for him or her, with all the resources that allow him to travel with me in Uganda, do all activities with their special requirements. In other wards, I should not be the one to command what a client wants but a client should command me what he/she wants to experience in Uganda. I respect and receive all clients regardless of age, ethnicity, education and political backgrounds.

In my view, the duty to understand/ advertise  or talk about what Uganda is and stands for must be a common responsibility of both Ugandans, government and the non-Ugandans who have traveled or read about Uganda online. To understand what Uganda is, you should interview/ask me intensively, inquire from your guide while touring Uganda and friends from far and near who have traveled Uganda, my colleagues at work, my family and relatives and above all the people I serve, both those who appreciate and more so those who have reason and no reason. But dislike me. From all that, one would have some basic data to define or describe the true me and my company as well as the community that I work with. Sharing dreams with other people, connection with African touch as well as physical reality brings you closer to loving and bonding for a real Africa – Uganda experience. This will not allow you to hold or hide your wonder, love, imagination, trust, joy, laugh and truth of what ONE VILLAGE TOURS can offer on its menu.

The most difficult word in the title is not to define “Uganda” but rather the word “Uganda’s beautiful nature” which is the key word here. True in this presentation will mean authentic, self-conscious, liberated, lover and promoter of Uganda’s identity or beauty. Uganda is simply rich in bio-diversity ie forests, national parks and game reserves, culture, rift valley and its features, lakes and rivers, mountains and hills, historical sites etc. Since I have limited space here, I may not be able to go through all about Uganda on this stage. What I propose is to try to define , describe what Uganda is, does, feel and leave the task of complementing the above  to all of you who accept to travel with us. I shall do this basing myself on the history, geography, cultural heritages, Uganda’s traditional religions, ethinity, environment and real life experience. “Uganda is the pearl of Africa”

Thank you and welcome.
