Early Tel Aviv - Half Day Walking Tour

Tel Aviv was only founded in 1909 but is already considered one of the world’s great cities. Some of the neighborhoods were founded earlier however, such as Neveh Tzedek and Neveh Shalom. In the middle of the 19th century the living conditions within Jaffa’s walls became unbearable so neighborhoods started popping up outside the walls to the north. Originally called Ahuzat Bayit, Tel Aviv was founded on the sand dunes north of Jaffa. The earlier built neighborhoods later broke with Jaffa and became part of the “First Modern Hebrew City” as it was referred to in those early days.

During this tour we will visit the following sites:

The Suzanne Dallal Center – This beautiful area first housed the neighborhood’s first girls and boys schools. We’ll see the restored buildings and the mural of the Neveh Tzedek’s founders.

The Homes of Early Residents – Walking through the neighborhood we’ll pass the homes of some of the first residents and hear their stories. Among them we’ll visit the Chelouche Synagogue and House, Beit Abulafiya, the Mashadi Old Age Home and the Rokach House.

Eden Cinema – The first cinema in Tel Aviv opened towards the end of Turkish Rule. We’ll talk about what went on in this first center of Tel Aviv’s cultural life.

Lillenblum Street – This street has some of the most beautifully renovated buildings from the 1920’s and 1930’s. Well talk about city architecture during this period and about some of the people who lived here.

Akiva Arieh Weiss House – Who was Akiva Arieh Weiss? Most Tel Avivians probably have no idea but you will. You’ll find out why he was an important figure in Tel Aviv’s beginnings.

Shalom Tower Lobby Exhibition – The lobby of the Shalom Tower houses some really good exhibitions about Tel Aviv with photos, models and murals. Here we’ll see and talk about them all.

Rothschild Boulevard – One of the most famous streets in Tel Aviv and also one of the first. We’ll start at the bottom and work our way up pointing out the most interesting places and events which occurred here.
